While Pineapple Express is unique in that it sits atop the action-druggie-buddy-comedy genre, it's not what I would call the most complicated or deep movie ever. It's 121 minutes of two impossibly baked guys trying not to freak, after one witnesses a murder, while out-witting drug lord Ted (Gary Cole) and crooked cop Carol's (Rosie Perez) attempts to kill them. You could make the argument that this movie is more than what it seems; exploring the bonds of friendship that Saul (James Franco), Dale (Seth Rogen) and to a lesser extent Red (Danny McBride) put to the test. While true to an extent, that may be over thinking this one a bit. And thinking is probably the last thing you're going to want to do when seeing this movie.
What you have is a mindless comedy that even the most straight laced person would have a hard time not enjoying. If you're looking to get away for a bit and just have a good time unwinding at the movies, then the Pineapple Express is exactly what you need.
Until next week that is.
