Syfy
Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at 08:44PM Tonight is the night that The Sci Fi Channel switches over to Syfy. To be honest I was halfway hoping they were joking when they announced two months ago that The Sci Fi Channel would be rebranding itself as "Syfy".

What the hell does "Imagine Greater" even mean?
From here:
“It’s a call to action,” <Dave Howe, president of the Sci Fi Channel>. “Look at the everyday and how you can turn it to the extraordinary. It’s an aspirational, optimistic message about enhancing people’s lives.”
God, I hate you so much.
“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular,” said TV historian Tim Brooks, who helped launch Sci Fi Channel when he worked at USA Network.
Well that's not too insulting.
Tim Brooks has some big balls lumping geeks and "dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games" into the same category of undesirables considering that was exactly the audience he wanted and exactly the audience that made the Sci Fi Channel a success.
And considering it's apparently still the 1950's he seems super on point with the female audience not digging anything Science Fiction, they're far too busy doing laundry and cooking dinner for that kind of nonsense. Best to let them stick to their Soaps.
“We spent a lot of time in the ’90s trying to distance the network from science fiction, which is largely why it’s called Sci Fi,” Mr. Brooks said.
Fail.
“When we tested this new name, the thing that we got back from our 18-to-34 techno-savvy crowd, which is quite a lot of our audience, is actually this is how you’d text it,” Mr. Howe said. “It made us feel much cooler, much more cutting-edge, much more hip, which was kind of bang-on what we wanted to achieve communication-wise.”
You mean your "techno-savvy crowd" apparently consisting of 18-to-34 year olds with cell-phones that they text with? Wow. That's a focus group on the bleeding edge right there. Not to mention the fact that taking your Sci Fi Geeky brand name and translating it into Texting Geeky DOESN’T MAKE SOMETHING MORE COOL. THAT’S THE FUCKING OPPOSITE.
Now, I love, love, love me some Sci Fi channel but they’re killing me with what is obviously marketing crap.
What is geeky has never been more in style these days and they are Captain of the U.S.S Geek on TV. It’s a shame that they’ve decided to shun what’s gotten them so far and sail for blander waters.
