WALL-E
Thursday, July 3, 2008 at 12:01AM Ok, nobody panic but I just saw WALL-E and apparently our environment may be in trouble. I really wish someone would have mentioned this to me already. I hadn't heard.
I apologize, I just needed to get that off my chest.
Ever since they ran full speed onto the movie scene, Pixar has really turned out to be one of those few studios that never puts out a bad movie. They just don't. Sure there are some which you may not particularly care for, but it would be hard to argue the point that the movie isn't good. With that said this week's movie was WALL-E and it's fucking amazing.
Surprise!
Don't let my opening confuse you; I loved all five thousand, eight hundred, and twenty seconds of WALL-E. There is the one minor speed bump which is where the above part of this review comes from but everything else more than makes up for it. WALL-E is adorable with his infectious personality. His love interest EVE is stoic, yet vulnerable. Their relationship is inspiring, and sad, and wonderful all at the same time. It was touching on every level and was amazingly accomplished with only a shared vocabulary of 3 words between the two of them. Don't ask me how Pixar managed that, but they did. Probably because they are geniuses or made some kind of deal involving Beelzebub and someone's soul (Who am I to judge?). At one point, for the briefest fraction of a second, with the theaters AC vent blowing directly in my eyes, I actually thought I was going to shed a single tear, the movie moved me that much. I know! I was weirded out by it too. I didn't of course because I'm a man. And that's what we do. Or don't do, I guess? whatever.
Anyway, the movie also has a great supporting cast of misfit characters, both human and machine. It's fascinating to watch as each one changes, for the better, after they meet WALL-E; as he inadvertently causes them all to challenge the lines they find themselves drawn into in their daily lives. And hopefully doing the same for you.
Go see it.
